Highlights from WLCU Sydney 2021
By Stephanie Wigan
As 2021 draws to a close, we reflect on the accomplishments of WLCU Sydney over the past 12 months. We also extend our gratitude and appreciation for the support WLCU Sydney has received from our generous Members and friends over this time.
Elite Performance Function with Michael Cheika and Brad Fittler (March 2021)
At the Elite Performance Function, WLCU Sydney raised $30,000. The proceeds were divided evenly between supporting the Lebanese football team, the Cedars, and donations of food hampers to Lebanon.
We were honoured to have former Australian Rugby Union Coach, Michael Cheika, and Legendary NSW Rugby League Coach, Brad Fittler, at the event along with 200 attendees, including many Australian footballers of Lebanese descent.
HSC Distinguished Achievers Awards Night, Class of 2020 (April 2021)
The WLCU Sydney hosted its first HSC Distinguished Achievers Awards during April 2021 at the Roundhouse of the University of New South Wales.
This was a momentous occasion for the Class of 2020 High School Certificate and International Baccalaureate graduates.
This annual event is now a wonderful opportunity for all to celebrate and acknowledge the youth of Lebanese descent, and their extraordinary results achieved in the final year of schooling.
Hi Kefna Ca Va (June 2021)
The WLCU hosted its first-ever expatriate event on a balmy Thursday evening during June 2021. The event took place at Bar Ombre in Sydney and a wonderful time was had by all. Hi! Keefna? Ça Va? The name of the soiree is the traditional Lebanese greeting, that we as part of the Lebanese diaspora are tickled with whenever we visit the golden shores of the motherland.
Food Hampers sent to Lebanon (July and August 2021)
With thanks to our generous Members and friends for their donations and support, the WLCU Sydney was able to provide large food hampers for the needy in Lebanon. Each hamper comprised of non-perishable foods sufficient to feed a family of 4 for one month. We are most humbled and our hearts forever touched, by the gratitude and emotional responses we received when the hampers were delivered.
Akkar Explosion Fundraiser (August 2021)
A special thank you to the WLCU Members and Friends, who generously donated to the Akkar Explosion appeal in August 2021.
With your support, WLCU Sydney raised $8,000 in this Appeal. These funds were used to purchase 780 tins of Baby Formula and 2000 packets of Panamax (100 tablets per pack).
Thank you for your support.
Hi Kefna Ca Va (November 2021)
WLCU Newsletter (Bi-monthly editions 2021)
The WLCU Sydney Newsletter is a bi-monthly editorial piece which is now received by WLCU Members and friends both locally and internationally. The articles are always informative, entertaining and provide added insight into Lebanese history and culture. One of the most popular segments are the Lebanese recipes, and this year we have had both sweet and savoury Lebanese culinary delights featured.
En Route to Beirut 2021 (December 2021)
The WLCU Sydney Annual Marquee Gala Event, En Route to Beirut, was recently held during December 2021. This year, our popular Lebanese taxi travelled to Tannoureen for the Mezze before heading to Zahle, Byblos, and Sidon before finishing our culinary and musical journey in our beloved Beirut. A wonderful time was had by all, and we hope to see you at next year’s Gala Event.
